The 5-day Kilimanjaro Marangu route journey begins at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, where you will complete the necessary registration and formalities. The first day's trek is relatively short and takes you through the lush rainforest of Kilimanjaro. You'll enjoy the beautiful scenery, rich biodiversity, and a chance to spot some wildlife. The trail gradually ascends, and after several hours of hiking, you'll arrive at the Mandara Hut where you will spend the night.
After breakfast, you'll continue your ascent through the rainforest. As you gain altitude, the vegetation changes, and you'll enter the heather and moorland zone. Along the way, you'll pass by Maundi Crater, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. After a full day of hiking, you'll reach the Horombo Hut, where you'll spend the night.
Today's trek takes you further up the mountain, traversing through the alpine desert zone. The trail gradually ascends, and you'll have a chance to admire the unique plant life adapted to the harsh mountain environment. As you approach Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt, the landscape becomes more rugged and barren. The hike is challenging, and you'll need to pace yourself. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, you'll have an early dinner and rest as much as possible to prepare for the summit push that begins later in the evening.
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. You'll start the summit attempt in the middle of the night, usually around midnight. The trail to the summit, called Uhuru Peak, is steep and requires a slow and steady pace. You'll hike through rocky terrain and scree slopes as you ascend higher. From Gilman's Point, it takes about an hour to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you'll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to the Horombo Hut, where you'll spend the night.
On the final day of the trek, you'll descend through the moorland and rainforest zones. The descent is easier and faster than the ascent, but you'll still need to watch your step on the slippery trails. You'll pass by Mandara Hut again and continue to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. At the gate, you'll receive your summit certificates, acknowledging your accomplishment. From there, you'll transfer to Moshi, where you can rest, celebrate, and reflect on your incredible journey up Mount Kilimanjaro.
