8 Day Snow Capped Rwenzori Mountains Hike Reaching 5109 Mts Overview

A true exciting challenge is never stopped by anything. This is a rewarding 8-days memorable hike activity to the summit of one of the tallest mountains in the continent of Africa; the snowcapped mountain Rwenzori in Uganda. Uganda is a beautiful tiny country east of the continent of Africa; gifted by nature and with some of the friendliest people on earth. Mount. Rwenzori is situated in the remote areas of Uganda thus offering a calm hiking and refreshing experience. You will use the Central circuit, a much easier route with a great record of successful hikes, less crowded, much enjoyable and perfect for acclimatization. Nights are spent in the campsites on the mountain with the ranger guides and porters. From the start to the end of the adventure, it is all interesting. We pick you up and drop you off at Entebbe international airport.

Itineraries

DAY 1: Arrival and drive to Kasese

On arrival at Entebbe international airport, you will be happily welcomed by our safari guide who will brief you about this rewarding adventure and also hit the road to Kasese, one of the major towns in western Uganda in which the mountain is found. You will enjoy Ugandan stories and breathtaking sceneries on this 7-8 hours drive, with lunch en-route, arriving at your lodge in Kasese late in the evening for some relaxation, dinner and a nap.

DAY 2: Ascend Nyakalengija (1648m) and on to Nyabitaba (2651m)

The day begins with an energy giving cup of coffee early morning, Followed by an exit to the trailhead at Nyakalengija. It is a 4-5 hour hike through terrain with elephant grass cover, bamboo plants, lush bushes and rocks. As you tackle the first level be expectant of the sight of some birds such as the Rwenzori Turacos; primates like the Black and White Columbus monkeys, Blue monkeys, and reptiles such as the three-horned Chameleon. You will traverse river Mahoma to Nyabitaba hut for lunch and later on dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3: From Nyabitaba (2651m) to John Matte (3503m)

At the point of Nyabitaba hut (2651) the temperature starts to change; thus a change in Lifestyle. None the less the day starts with a hefty breakfast, and the journey continues, for another few hours depending on your speed. The terrain is slippery, therefore much care is needed as you move through a forest, to the Shafer Bridge, into the network with River Bujuku and Mubuku. Go further to Nyamulenga rock shelter, a point offering an amazing view of the two great mountains – Stanley and Speke. Around that area will you have lunch and acclimatize, before proceeding to John Matte camp for dinner and a nap. You then spot the Margarita glaciers and the magnificent mountain Stanley summit at a closer range.

DAY 4: John Matte (3503m) to Bujuku (3900m)

After a nutricious breakfast, your real mountaineering experience begins, with no retreat or surrender. You’ve got to keep moving, across the Bujuku River to the lower Bigo bog area; a transition into a unique temperature. Proceed to the upper Bigo, with some constructed boardwalk at a stream for a Lunch break.
Thereafter you will connect to the southern edge of a lake offering a magnificent view of the Mount Speke to the north, Mount Baker to the south, and Mount Stanley to the west. Arrive at Bujjuki hut- an altitude of 3900m for dinner and overnight late in the evening.

DAY 5: Bujuku (3900m) to Kitandara (4023m)

Rise to an energizing breakfast and then tackle the newly created trail, a magnificent route meandering to an area with great moss and groundsel vegetation at 4,372m leading you to Elena hut at 4,430mtrs. You will have a lunch break and then proceed a little further to Kitandara Hut for your dinner and overnight. At this point, a transition is made to the summit, and there is a clear experience of the snow depending on the weather.

DAY 6: Kitandara (4023m) to Guy Yeoman (3505m)

After an early morning breakfast a decision is made either to ascend further for about 5-6 hours to the Margherita Summit (5109m) or not. It is a challenging hike, which sees you traverse three glacier areas, ice and slippery terrain. It is preferred to the physically fit and able hikers, who hit the Stanley plateau and then to the Margherita peak for photos, etc.
Thereafter, you will descend through the Scott- Eliot route with amazing views to Kitandara Lakes for dinner and overnight.

DAY 7: Guy Yeoman (3505m) to Nyakalengija

Start this day with breakfast, and then descending through the headwall right at the base of Mount Baker to the southern side of the mountain. At this point, you can now enjoy the magnificent views of Mount Stanley to the north and Congo to the west. Proceed with the route through the rock shelter at Bujongolo; the campsite of Duke of Abruzzi in 1906. You will spend the night at peace in the Ruboni community.

DAY 8: Descend and Departure

On this day, you will kick-start the day with hefty breakfast before joining your driver-guide for a departure drive to Entebbe international airport for your flight or any other stopover point. Lunch will be taken at the equator point.
