The 3 Days Mahoma Loop Rwenzori Nature Walk camping trail takes in the most popular camping trail with Excellence Africa Adventure Rwenzori Mountains. The Mahoma Nature trail is a typical wild camping trail in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, home to a wonder of high glaciers and beautiful valley lakes. Bearded lichen hanging from giant heathers with a backdrop of rocky cliffs, crags and snowcapped peaks, and you will encounter a wide variety of flora and fauna with several biospheres as you ascend through different vegetation zones. This creates the ultimate nature trekking experience and, due to the region being barely touched by modern developments, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful treks in the world.
Your 3 Days Mahoma Nature walk/ camping trail trek starts in the morning after breakfast. Our driver/guide will collect you from either Fort Portal or Kasese at 8:00am and transfer you to the Rwenzori Mountains National Park where you will meet the guides, porters and chefs who will accompany you on the trek. You main guide will lead you to the park gate where you will complete a registration with Uganda Wildlife Authority and attend a briefing with our professional and expert guide before starting the hike.
This hike starts at the park gate and initially takes you through garden plots and elephants grass before you enter the forest zone. This takes you through the pristine rainforest of Kyambogho Ridge with a view of the Mubuku Valley. Thereafter climb the heavily forested ridge which is home to many primates including the Black and White Colobus monkey, Blue monkey and occasionally the L’hoest monkey as you follow the first peaks in the Rwenzoris called the Portal Peaks.
We will arrive at Omu’kakizza Rest Camp at 2,977m asl for dinner and an overnight rest. Enjoy the magnificent views over the Rwenzori foothills and Kasese town.
The second day will see us hiking to Lake Mahoma with the forest giving way to a long narrow moss-covered ridge up to 3,515 meters. Trek through an incredibly beautiful forest of giant heather covered in layers of bright green moss.
You will follow the footprints of mountain Elephants through the bamboo and heather forest and you may even see and watch them having a drink at the hot springs. The ridge will lead you to the Rukenga Valley where you will see the everlasting flowers and the giant lobelia. You then cross to Lake Mahoma Camp for dinner and an overnight rest.
From Lake Mahoma with a clear sky you will have views of Mount Baker and Mount Stanley.
After breakfast there will be time for a walk around Lake Mahoma before descending back through the bamboo zone to the junction of the Central Circuit trail. The descent then continues past Nyabitaba to the Mpanga Ridge to adjoin the Mubuku Valley, home of Three-horned Chameleon. After pausing at a resting point the descent finally brings us back to Mihunga park gate to end your beautiful 3 day Trek in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
